How to Build Your Own Racing Car

There is a growing market for build-it-yourself racing cars, those which mimic the lightweight Lotus 7-type cars of the 1950s & early 1960s. The market has opened up further in recent years, catering for all sizes of wallet - & ambition - ranging from the GBP £250-budget 'Locost' to GBP £50,000+ Jaguar C & D-type replica racers, & plenty in between.

In case you are interested in taking the plunge in to the DIY-race automobile world, there are some things to think about before your wallet need get involved. First, you will need to think about the various classes of race automobile, the makes & models that are eligible for with competition, & the dozens of kit automobile producers who are prepared to take your hard-earned funds. Some questions to think about for example would include whether or not you intend to make use of the automobile for road use, or whether the automobile is a race-only machine - or, indeed, both.

time you have settled on a class, make & model of kit race automobile, you will also need to think about which specific kit specification suits your skills set (&, in most cases, wallet). Most kits are obtainable in built, half built, or part form, with prices matched accordingly. Half built cars, for example, are priced at considerably higher levels than the more basic part form kits, which arrive literally as a box of bits. At this stage, you'll need to balance the increasing cost against the reduced build time & skills requirement. At this stage, it will probably be a pleasant suggestion to speak to the race series organizers or, at the least, the car's owners club, about the relative pros & cons of the particular model & specification you are thinking about.

With the kit ordered, your next task will be to source an appropriate donor vehicle. The donor vehicle acts as a 'parts bin' for plenty of the more mundane parts (such as the wiring loom, gearbox, wheels, & so on) which can be pricey & time consuming to source brand-new. As a general rule, a pleasant quality donor vehicle will significantly aid the completion of a pleasant quality racing automobile, so make positive the parts you intend to salvage are of lovely quality.

With the kit now in your possession, it is time to commence assembly of the automobile. This will need much patience, so be positive to receive a pleasant quality race automobile handbook before picking up the spanners.

Time the build method has been carried out; you'll need to have the automobile tested by the SVA in case you need to drive it on the road. If the automobile passes the check (which is, to all intents, a super-detailed MOT) your automobile will be issued with all the paperwork needed for it to be road-legal. With adequate insurance in place, it is now time to take the automobile out on the road - enjoy.

The final task will be to source & install the racing accessories needed to compete. These will usually include a plumbed-in racing fire extinguisher & battery cut-off switches for the automobile, in addition to race suits, racing helmets & racing boots for the driver(s). You'll need to consult either your race organizers or the MSA for a full list of mandatory safety accessories here, but it is always advisable to speak to both.
